Colonel Stephen G. Smith

Colonel Stephen G. Smith is a native of Atlanta, GA, and a graduate of The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, where he received his commission in 1991 as a Field Artillery officer. His first assignment was in Korea as a Fire Direction Officer and then Platoon Leader with Bravo Battery, 8th Battalion, 8th Field Artillery, 2d Infantry Division. Colonel Smith then served as a Company Fire Support Officer, Battery Executive Officer, and Battalion S1 with 2d Battalion, 319th Airborne Field Artillery Regiment (AFAR), 82d Airborne Division. Colonel Smith later joined the 1st Infantry Division in Germany to serve as the DIVARTY Assistant S3 and deployed to Hungary in support of Operation Joint Guardian. Upon redeployment, he assumed command of Bravo Battery, 25th Field Artillery, 1st Infantry Division.
Following command, Colonel Smith was assigned an AC/RC position as a Fire Support Trainer with the 2-114th Field Artillery, Mississippi Army National Guard. During this time period, he earned a Masters of Business Administration from Mississippi State University. Following graduation from the Army’s Command and General Staff College in 2002, Colonel Smith returned to the 82d Airborne Division and deployed to Afghanistan as the Coalition Task Force 82 Fire Support Coordinator. Immediately following this deployment, Colonel Smith deployed to Iraq as the Fire Support Officer for 2d Brigade Combat Team (BCT), 82d Airborne Division.
Upon return, he served as the Battalion S3 for 2d Battalion, 319th AFAR and later became the Executive Officer for the 82d Airborne Division Artillery where he deployed to New Orleans in support of the Division’s Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts. Upon return, Colonel Smith served as the Brigade Executive Officer for the 4th BCT, 82d Airborne Division as the Brigade was established. In 2006, Colonel Smith was assigned to Norfolk, VA where he served as Special Assistant to the Commander, USJFCOM. In 2008, Colonel Smith assumed command of the 2d Battalion, 377th Parachute Field Artillery Regiment, 4th BCT, 25th Infantry Division, Ft. Richardson, AK and deployed the combined maneuver-fires BN TF to Afghanistan with the Brigade. In 2010 he served with the Army’s Senior Leader Division (Colonel’s Management) in Washington, DC. Colonel Smith then served as an Army War College Fellow with the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, also in Washington, DC. Most recently, Colonel Smith commanded the 18th Field Artillery Brigade.
