The mission of the fire crew at Fort Bragg is really two-fold. The crew serves in both fire suppression and prescribed burning. Most often, wildfires start up due to training exercises. The burning crew is always the first responder to suppress the fire before it endangers critical animal habitat or structures on the installation. The other primary responsibility is conducting prescribed burns. The longleaf pine-wiregrass ecosystem that exists on Fort Bragg is dependent on a cyclic fire regime. Therefore, the fire crew is responsible for regularly conducting controlled burns on specific tracts throughout the year. This process results in less fuel on the ground to sustain a wildfire, better habitat for endangered species, and better overall health for the forest ecosystem.
