Fort Bragg was the first
Army installation to accept the challenge to
approach long-term planning using sustainable
principles and concepts. From development of the initial 25-year
goals, to creation and implementation of
Sustainable Sandhills – the regional
sustainability program, to full integration of
sustainability by way of the Garrison Commander's
Strategic Plan, Fort Bragg continues to
establish the path for others to follow.
Today, the program does not operate
alone. Directorates and agencies across the
installation and neighboring communities are
embracing sustainability practices within their
own ranks.
Environmental Policy:
The Right Way...
Obey environmental laws by being aware of
Federal, State, and Fort Bragg environmental regulations.
The Green Way...
Practice pollution prevention by choosing actions to safeguard
health, the environment, financial, and natural resources.
All the Way.
Keep improving by being aware of the long-term impacts of your
actions and choosing to minimize them.
“
Fort
Bragg – a sustainable community meeting the
needs of the Soldier today, tomorrow and forever”
encompasses the original sustainability goals,
elevates sustainability from “just an
environmental program” to the responsibility of
everyone within the Fort Bragg community, and
demonstrates the installation’s commitment to
the Army’s triple bottom line of Mission,
Environment, Community.
In order to maintain the
Fort Bragg legacy and continue to train troops
to standard, it is necessary to integrate
long-term sustainability planning into the
day-to-day operations of the installation.
As a sustainable community, Fort Bragg
will:
- Provide soldiers
with the necessary training to ensure mission
success without compromising local or regional
environmental quality;
- Be recognized as a world leader in practicing global
citizenship and promoting sustainability values;
- Continually seek
new technologies, share lessons learned, and
promote the exchange of ideas within the
region and its communities;
- Restore and
protect these valuable assets for future
generations as nationally recognized stewards
of significant cultural and natural resources;
and
- Be an integral
part of a healthy and thriving region where all
enjoy a high quality of life and access to vital
resources.
From compatible land use planning, to food waste
studies, to renewable energy sources, to
alternative fuel and alternative fueled
vehicles, to LEED (Leadership in Energy an
Environmental Design) certified buildings, teams
associated with each objective of the
Sustainable Community goal are actively moving
forward with action plans and projects to
benefit Fort Bragg and our Soldiers, families,
and community.
