82nd Airborne Division Colors

Maj. Gen. John W. Nicholson, Jr. relinquished command of the 82nd Airborne Division to Brig. Gen. Richard D. Clarke, October 3, 2014. Maj. Gen. Nicholson has been selected for promotion to lieutenant general; his next assignment will be as Commander, Allied Land Command, North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Izmir, Turkey. Brig. Gen. Clarke’s previous assignment was as the 74th Commandant of Cadets, United States Military Academy, West Point, New York.


 About the 82nd Airborne


The 82nd Airborne Division is an active airborne infantry division of the United States Army specializing in parachute landing operations.  

82nd Abn. Div.

Based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, the 82nd Airborne Division is the primary fighting arm of the XVIII Airborne Corps.  The 82nd Division was constituted in the National Army on 5 August 1917, and was organized on 25 August 1917, at Camp Gordon, Georgia. Since its initial members came from all 48 states, the unit acquired the nickname "All-American", which is the basis for its famed “AA” shoulder patch.
