82nd Airborne Division Deputy Commanding General - Interoperability
Brigadier James Learmont CBE
BG Learmont was commissioned into the Royal Artillery in 1986. He has served in numerous combat units including: 3rd Regiment Royal Horse Artillery in Germany and with the United Nations in Cyprus (1988); 29th Commando Regiment Royal Artillery in Northern Iraq (1991), with the United Nations in Cambodia (1992) and in Norway; 1st Regiment Royal Horse Artillery in Bosnia (1996); as the Adjutant 40th Regiment (The Lowland Gunners) Royal Artillery in Germany and Bosnia (1997); as a Battery Commander in 29th Commando Regiment Royal Artillery in Iraq (2003) where he was attached to the Future Fires shop within the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters; and as the Commanding Officer 7th Parachute Regiment Royal Horse Artillery in the United Kingdom and Afghanistan (2008).
BG Learmont’s staff tours have included: instructional posts at the Army Foundation College in Harrogate and the Army Junior Division of the Staff College; Brigade Major Royal Artillery in the 3rd (UK) Division; the Developments, Concepts and Doctrine Centre where he was responsible for Land Doctrine; the ISAF Joint Command as the Deputy Chief Future Plans working within the US Army I Corps (2012); the US Army G-3/5/7 Strategy, where he was the Policy lead for the Regional Alignment of Forces concept; and a tour at NATO Headquarters in Brussels where he was the Military Assistant to the Director General International Military Staff.
BG Learmont’s education has been at the Australian Army Command and Staff College and the United States Army War College where he obtained Master’s Degrees in Defense and Strategic Studies respectively.
BG Learmont is currently serving as the Deputy Commanding General - Interoperability for the 82nd Airborne Division. His interests include all (mainly British) sport, trekking and endurance running.
